Happy belated-Halloween! Now I know the holiday was last week, but I was all psyched up for it and I just had to do something Halloween-related. So, this post will be highlighting the creepy characters of some of my favorite Nintendo games. Now, granted, I haven’t played every Nintendo game ever (that would probably take the rest of my life), so there are probably creepier characters out there, but these are from the ones I’ve played. Here are my top three.
Going in reverse order, Bowser is my number three. Now, this isn’t because of his design or anything, because visually there is nothing overly creepy about him. No, it’s his habit of kidnapping Princess Peach. Seriously, he’s a dinosaur-turtle hybrid who’s only goal in life is to kidnap a princess over and over again. I admire his dedication, but he clearly has an obsession with her, and that’s just creepy.
Re-deads take the number two spot on my list. They are minor enemies in the Zelda series and appear in several of the games, most notably Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess. They look like mummified people, without the wrappings. They don’t do anything at first except sit there, so I dismissed them as harmless. But then I got near one and it moved. Of course, this makes me stop walking and wait to see what happens. I am then treated to this horrible screeching sound. I try to run away, only to realize that Link is paralyzed with fear and will not move. The thing ends up attaching to me and sucking at my brain. It freaked me out, and I did everything I could to avoid Re-deads after that. I believe they make appearances in Smash Bros. Melee in the Zelda part of Solo Adventure Mode, but their screeching isn’t as terrifying and it doesn’t paralyze you. They still suck your brains though.
The number one creepiest character I have ever seen is also from a Zelda game. His name is Ghirahim. He acts as Demise’s (aka. Ganondorf’s) right-hand man, and Link encounters him several times during the game. He gave me serious chills. Why? Because he’s a freak. He practically embodies the Stranger Danger rule we were taught as kids. He tends to have this creepy smile (that I have dubbed his ‘rape face’), and he acts like everything is funny. It’s weird. Not only that, but he seems to be bipolar. As you progress through the game, he goes from silly and weird to angry and weird and then back again at the drop of a hat. It’s really strange. He also seems to have no concept of Link’s personal space. And his tongue…..ugh. Just….creepy. Play Skyward Sword if you don't believe me. Seriously.
Well, that’s my top three creepiest characters. There are others that make the list, but I think three is enough to deal with, thank you very much. And while these guys may not be nightmare-inducing (with, perhaps, the exception of the Re-deads), they are certainly creepy. I wouldn’t want to meet any of them in a dark alley.
………..
Scratch that, I don’t want to meet any of them in broad daylight either. O.o
Go and do not falter!
